Compensate Our Spouses.

As the Salaries and Remuneration Commission seeks to curb expenses especially on foreign trips and allowances by members of county assemblies, a member of the Embu County Assembly is pushing for more allowances. These are not ordinary allowances but are strange and weird in nature. This is about the compensation of their wives which is of pure rhetoric and lacks substance in its own self. How can a person of such caliber demand for his wife to be paid allowances for the loneliness they suffer while their husbands are busy serving the public? When you were campaigning didn’t you know what you were going for? With such a demand, the MCA means that he is unable to care for his wife and as such to have made a decision to request his wife to be cared for, should also mean that the bedroom matters (conjugal rights) should also but taken care of by anyone who has the guts to.
Runyenjes Central Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Steve  Munene argues that their spouses need compensation

Who will then compensate the poor village woman whose husband is working tirelessly to make sure his family doesn’t lack anything? To our dear MCA, you were not elected to go ad fight for the rights of your wife and family but to serve the electorate. Stand up as a man and take care of your wives’ needs and not shaming your own family with such remarks.

THE TWITTER CHIEF

Meet Chief Kariuki the twitter man. He is a simple, humble and most of all a God fearing public servant. The famous chief has managed to tackle insecurity at his village in Nakuru County. He has done this through the application of technology and twitter in particular, that’s when he attained the name the twitter chief.

Chief Kariuki hails from a humble background and family. He is the third born in a family of six. He went through ups and downs and a lot of challenges in order to attain his education. After which he became a primary school teacher for 21years to the level of a school headmaster. Feeling not contended with that, the chief wanted to interact more with all sorts of people from different backgrounds. This is when the post of chief came by, and without much hesitation he did the interview and passed. From then he became a chief.

The twitter chief has held various seminars and meetings in various counties and towns to educate other chiefs on the efficient use of twitter. He has managed to be invited to various conferences hosted and attended by the well known in the country and the continent at large. They include our Kenyan president, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta and the Google CEO. He has travelled to various countries courtesy of his idea on tweeter.

“Make use of the platform you have for your own good”. That is a parting shot from the twitter chief.

Killer police officers

Kwekwe is her name, this can be mistaken with the  special police unit now dismantled that was accused of extra judicial killings. She is a 14-year-old girl Kwekwe Mwandaza, a class 4 pupil in Kwale Couny. The ambitious girl was full of vigor to accomplish her dreams and be a better person in future. This has been cut short by her death caused by the same people who are supposed to ensure that our security is guaranteed.  The young girl was killed by police officers in pretence of self defense.  This raises questions to how a young girl can be able to threaten more than eight armed policemen to an extent that they had to shoot three bullets to ensure that they were safe. More shaming fact is that the county commissioner defends the police by saying that they were defending themselves.

The commissioner also claims that the young girl came out with a machete and tried to attack the police, this brings to question the kind of training undergone by the police officers. If only a machete can make them shoot then they must be cowards themselves; not even an old grandma could be terrified at the sight of a machete. The police should give us a break because we are tired of such killings which the poor are the victims. We hope the officers will be taken to court and that justice will prevail.

Election Riots.

Several students were injured in Moi University main campus after students rioted due to the upcoming MUSO elections. The riots sparkled off  after a very intense meeting known as cross fire at the students centre, the meeting is always held nearly each election year. Each aspirant airs their views and manifestos on how they will govern the students most.

The riots took tribal lines and divided the students into two groups along tribal lines. Stones were thrown all over injuring some of the students. The ambulance siren could be heard ferrying the injured persons the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for further treatment.

This puts to the limelight the level of tribalism that has taken toll in our country’s politics and how it has entered into our learning institutions.

THE MARGRET THATCHER

At the mention of Margret Thatcher, it rings in everyone’s minds about the famous prime minister of the United Kingdom. In this case, I am referring to the giant Margret Thatcher library found in Moi University which houses the school of information sciences. The library was named after the right Honorable former prime minister of United Kingdom Margret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher. This is a building that houses thousands and thousands of information materials that are used by the entire Moi University students, lecturers’ non teaching staff and other researchers. This is a large modern building that can be mistaken to be the administration block of the institution, this is due to its design and the facilities it contains. Truly it must have taken the designers and contractors a very long time to come up with it.

Underneath the good design and various holdings of the Margret Thatcher, there are various security issues that are hard to be noticed. These include security against fire. Due to the nature of information materials that are in paper form, there is the risk of fire attack. The institution did install a fire alarm system that alerts the users instead of fire. But the alarm is not functioning since its damaged and it hasn’t been repaired for a very long time. This is maybe because the concerned personnel do not see its need because there hasn’t been any fire in the library.

The need for smoke detectors in the library that detect any form of smoke and alert people with a screeching sound. This makes the personnel to immediately act on it before excess damage occurs. Again it gives rise to the issue of lack of enough fire fighting equipments to be used to fight the fire, the equipments include carbon dioxide type fire extinguisher, water type fire extinguisher dry chemical powder type and foam chemical, which are very necessary to safeguard the building. The staff should also be sensitized on how to use the equipments by setting up fire drills.

The fire exit doors are always under lock and key. This is so risky in that in case of fire the users and personnel in the library will be trapped inside with no escape route for them. According to the fire safety standards, all the escape routes should be open always.

The security personnel employed by the university are doing a good job by ensuring that books and other information materials are not taken out of the library without the necessary authorization. This gives marks to the institution irrespective of the level of training and competency. The availability of wireless networks (WIFI) in the library and school of information science is also a plus to the institution. Although the networks at times fail to work and also not enough to be used by the large number of students, it has enabled them to access information in the internet with ease.

The safety of the building leads to safety of information materials which leads to safety of users and personnel and finally quality output of graduates that are compatible to the current market.
